“reisfleisch” is something that i grew up with. my dad used to make it for me and i just had a craving for it the other day. for those of you who don’t know what it is: it basically is a one pot rice dish with meat and paprika. for me it is kind of typically austrian, probably because it reminds me of my childhood. however it probably stems more from hungary or the likes (due to the paprika). in any case its really tasty and quick to make. my dad used to make it in a pressure cooker. since i don’t have one, i just used a normal pot, which is just fine. also was ready within 20 minutes.
ingredients (2 people)
- 250 g turkey meat cut into cubes
- 1 cup rice
- 1 tea spoon salt
- 2 cups warm instant vegetable soup (if you want it more savory use chicken or veal broth)
- 1-2 tbsp paprika powder
- 3/4 tbsp dried marjoram
- 1 onion
- 1-2 cloves of garlic
- maybe some grated cheese
peel onion and garlic and chop finely. heat some oil in a pot and sauté, add meat und let brown. pour in the warm soup (just dissolve powder in hot water from the tab), add rice and season with paprika powder, salt and marjoram. be generous with the seasoning, since the rice soaks up quite a bit and he needs more flavor (otherwise the reisfleisch tastes boring). put the lid on the pot and let cook on medium heat for 15-20 minutes, until the water is all soaked up. give it a good stir, place on plates and if you like sprinkle with grated cheese.
